Statistics for Bioinformatics (MATH 162) to be offered Spring 2008SJSU Catalog description: "Introduction to data analysis methods which are widely used in bioinformatics. Methods deal with prediction, classification, optimization, and clustering. The methods are placed into the context of principles and models of statistical science, with emphasis on Bayesian methods." This course is not taught often, so take advantage and plan to make it part of your schedule next semester. This would be a very helpful class for computer science students that need to satisfy their extra math course requirement for a math minor. Beta Thalassemia ProjectThe class project in BIOL/CS 123B will be the creation of a website resource that provides a map of mutations related to the blood disorder Beta Thalassemia. I've set up a website located at beta.sproutcasa.com to share links or other info. Please create an account there if you have something -- links, article references, comments -- that you'd like to add. A simple, hopefully helpful site for SJSU students interested in BioinformaticsFor several reasons I thought this site would prove useful. The primary reason being that this field is still relatively new and a club or student organization hasn't yet been established. I think a resource for help with various bioinformatics problems could really be beneficial in a course like Bio/CS 123. Hopefully it works out!
